The program is structured around three interconnected aspects:
1. Improvisation as Artistic Practice
Participants will explore improvisation as a tool for listening, communication, composition, and spontaneous artistic expression. Through practical exercises and guided sessions, they will develop their ability to respond creatively within individual and collective performance contexts.
2. Introduction to the Main Arabic Maqams
The masterclass will provide a comprehensive overview of the principal Arabic maqams, their characteristics, emotional qualities, interval structures, and practical applications. Participants will engage in focused listening sessions featuring selected references from classical and contemporary Arabic compositions. These examples will be analyzed collectively, allowing participants to develop listening skills and personal notes on maqam usage and interpretation.
3. Creative Application and Performance Development
The final component focuses on integrating improvisation and maqam knowledge into artistic practice. Participants will work individually and collectively to develop musical ideas, improvisational frameworks, and short performance outputs that demonstrate their understanding of the material explored throughout the masterclass.
Throughout the program, Wael ElSayed will also present examples from his own artistic practice and share compositional and improvisational techniques developed through his professional experience, offering participants practical references and creative tools.
The workshop concludes with a presentation on September 11th 2026, offering participants an opportunity to share the results of their learning and collaborative work with an audience in an informal performance setting.
We believe this format would offer a valuable opportunity for participants to deepen their engagement with Arabic musical traditions while developing practical improvisational skills within a contemporary artistic framework.
