A theater performance created by Freja Sande
California Girls is the story of three friends and their microwave. The world of the play is created using only the light from an overhead projector, thereby creating a visually mysterious and awe-inspiring performance. The performance is devised through months of honest conversation between the actors and improvisation exploring themes of nostalgia, grief and loneliness. The ensemble on stage is, whilst performing, shaping their surroundings using light. Whilst the characters meet to eat popcorn and point to the moon, they’re all silently consumed by death and loss, dreaming of a different past. The play is set to the sound of a radio channel, playing the same old, groovy tunes, day in and day out. California Girls is a playful and mesmerising play, intimate and innocent. It invites the audience into a home; a home that we can’t possibly hold on to, a home that is forever changing, a home filled with the soothing smell of freshly popped popcorn.
California Girls ist die Geschichte von drei Freundinnen und ihrer Mikrowelle. Die Welt des Stücks entsteht allein durch das Licht eines Overheadprojektors, was eine visuell geheimnisvolle und beeindruckende Aufführung schafft. Die Performance wurde über Monate hinweg durch ehrliche Gespräche zwischen den Schauspielerinnen und Improvisationen entwickelt, die Themen wie Nostalgie, Trauer und Einsamkeit erkunden. Das Ensemble auf der Bühne gestaltet während des Spiels aktiv seine Umgebung mit Licht. Während die Charaktere sich treffen, um Popcorn zu essen und zum Mond zu zeigen, sind sie insgeheim von Tod und Verlust eingenommen, träumend von einer anderen Vergangenheit. Das Stück wird von den Klängen eines Radiosenders begleitet, der Tag für Tag dieselben alten, groovigen Melodien spielt. California Girls ist ein verspieltes und fesselndes Theaterstück – intim und unschuldig. Es lädt das Publikum in ein Zuhause ein; ein Zuhause, das sich nicht festhalten lässt, ein Zuhause, das sich unaufhörlich verändert, ein Zuhause, das vom beruhigenden Duft frisch gepoppten Popcorns erfüllt ist.
